Clarification/understanding headphone disconnect issue

Post by russell1997 on Tue Apr 08, 2014 12:03 pm

Hi SoundAbout,

I'm a new user. I've installed/un-installed the app several time over the past couple days trying it out and I can't figure out if the app is going to do what I need it to or not.

Basically in the past few months my phone has started having an issue where after i connect headphones then later unplug them I no longer get notifications via the speaker even though I'm not in the Vibrate sound profile. It's acting like the headphones are still plugged in or i'm in vibrate mode when i'm not.

I did some searching and found an app called headset toggle but it was incompatible with my phone but it referenced soundabout.

In reference to the articles I found on this site:
http://soundabout.userboard.net/t13-main-speaker-ear-speaker-and-or-microphone-not-working
http://soundabout.userboard.net/t165-rerouting-phone-call-audio

I may just not be using the app correctly.

I turned off the detection but if I do that i get no audio when i plug in headphones. So, I don't want to use that all the time but i think that would fix my speaker notifications. I installed the app again after i read you have a headset toggle right before I'm posting this. It sounds like I need to use the toggle after i plug in headphones? After I unplug i toggle it off? I haven't had time to test the widget yet but will report back.

Is there anything I'm missing? Any tips or suggestions on my problem?

It's tough when the phone starting faultering and not detecting the headset being plugged or unplugged properly. SoundAbout can help, but it requires manually changing settings (as you noticed).

Probably the best/easiest thing to do is re-check the headset detection, then put the widget named "headset toggle" on the home screen. If you plug in a headset, the widget icon should still say DETECT but the icon will change to show sound waves coming out of the headset. When you unplug, the sound waves disappear. If the icon does not change, then you can press the widget and "force" the headset to be ON and/or OFF. That is the quickest way.

yeah I agree, the problem is inconsistent so finding a work around that works all the time is an issue.

Yesterday, i left the auto detect on and put the toggle widget on my main screen. after i got home (from my commute where i had a radio transmitter plugged into the headphones) i noticed my notifications were not working so i used the toggle widget to toggle it from detect>On>Off. but i noticed i still was not getting notifications so i changed it to ON then i got notifications (which did not make sense to me?). But later, it seemed like notification quit working again so i had to change it to OFF and then i got notifications again. And keep in mind this is without using the headphones again since my commute. Then i noticed it was set back to detect before i went to bed but i didn't toggle it again.

I'll try watching it closer today. perhaps i can find a pattern, i may have to turn off auto detect and use the toggle only?

I appreciate the feedback, having some way to control this without rebooting the phone it a huge plus.

observations from Wednesday.

i still have auto detect option checked. according to the widget, plugging in and unplugging headphones the icon show correct (waves when plugged in : jack icon when not) every single time. However, audio output to speaker does not work.

I did not experience the automatic switching between detect and on like the previous post. after listening in the car i switched it to OFF and it stayed on OFF and the sounds worked like normal.

Oh, I noticed signatures don't show so for information, I'm running the ATT Galaxy S3 with Cyanogen 11.0 M3.

If you would like to check out the latest Beta, with it's increased Notification/Ringtone settings, it is located here:
http://soundabout.userboard.net/f8-download-beta-versions

It works really well with Bluetooth in the car.

This version has a new SoundAbout Voice Recognition icon that will allow you do use the car's Bluetooth microphone to do voice recognition using Google Now and get the response through the car speakers.

If you use Google Maps nav and set up the Text-To-speech the navigation will shut off the radio and come through the car speakers and then turn the radio back on.

i haven't tried the beta yet but unchecking the auto detect and relying on the toggle widget seems to be the most reliable. phone will still get stuck. sometime i have to unplug toggle off and on hit volume up or down and see if i can hear the sound for volume adjustment and if i do i can turn it back to off and recheck i can still hear the volume up or down, notifications will be flawless after that.

I bought the full version even though i'm probably not using the paid functionality Smile

I'll give the beta a try at some point unless it's get pushed to the main soon. it would be nice if i could send notification to the speaker even though i'm listening to the podcast on headphones. Smile

Yes, sometimes if it's a hardware issue or and issue in the OS, it can be difficult to overcome.
