Audio keeps getting turned down.

Post by BradM on Wed Sep 25, 2013 7:07 pm

I connect my phone via a sterio patch cable to my car's auxiliary input port. In this situation, I want the phone volume set to maximum so the volume is controlled by the radio. I think SoundAbout keeps turning down the volume. How do I stop that?

SoundAbout will detect the 3.5mm plug and use the "Wired Headphones" audio output if the "Media audio" setting is on "Let app decide" and the "Wired headset behavior" / "Wired headset detection" setting is checked.

There is no code that lowers the volume.   That "functionality" is built into some phones to "save" your hearing.

I've been using this setup for a very long time, first with my GS3 and now with my G2. Either phone has never lowered the volume, once I had everything hooked, up until I installed SoundAbout. And, it lowered the volume in the middle of playing, not when the patch cable was plugged in.

Brad,

If you go into Phone Settings, Manage apps, find SoundAbout, which version of SoundAbout do you have? I am wondering if an older version may have had some volume code that I put in while testing.

I have version 2.5.6.1 installed. I didn't think of this until after I posted the original post, but I also run Tasker on my device. I some of my profiles I do adjust the volume, so it's very possible that Tasker is doing it and not SoundAbout. Having said that, as I said in the OP, I've been running with Tasker and my current setup for a long time and it wasn't until I installed SoundAbout that this started to happen. I will try turning on Tasker's logging option and see if I can pin it down to that or not. Trouble is, it's random when it happens. For example, I got all the way to work without a volume adjustment. But I did get one on my drive home.

That is odd. Version 2.5.6.1 doesn't have any volume manipulation for the wired headset modes. Is there anything else activated at the time, like WiFi, Bluetooth, or GPS? Maybe if one of these is on and tries to connect there is something reacting. There is an event in Android called "AUDIO_TOO_NOISY" that fires to tell any apps that care that a headset or Bluetooth is being connected or disconnected. This way the apps can turn down the volume so it doesn't blast through the speaker or headset. There could be an app reacting to this event.

I did some testing and I think it is either Verizon or LG that is adjusting the volume. For some reason my audio app is restarting and when it does the phone automatically adjusts the volume down, I assume, because it thinks a headset is connected. I tested with Tasker disabled so I am confident it's not one of my profiles doing it. Sorry for the bother, but I am convinced it's not SoundAbout that's doing it.

I noticed today that whenever I get in my Car (Honda 2012 Civic EX) and connect through Bluetooth and am using Pandora One, the audio on Pandora itself is set to 0. This wasn't happening until the most recent update the other day. Any suggestions?

p.s. I really appreciate the app, and originally bought it just to avoid having notifications coming out of my speaker when my headphones were plugged in. I finally went Pro to show support.

What version of Pandora do you have? I've been seeing some strange issues with the volume in Pandora as they try to map their own volume control with the settings in Android.

I would check to see if you may have accidentally turned on a new setting and set the wired headset volume to zero.

I just uploaded a new version that you may want to download from Google Play.

1) In SoundAbout, go into the Wired Headset behavior screen.
2) See if the "Plug-in Volume On/Off" setting is checked and if so what the "Plug-in volume" is set to.

Pandora is the Pandora One version: 5.0

and in the Wired Headset it's not checked. Also I had uninstalled both SoundAbout and Pandora to try and see if something was corrupted, and no change.

I'm running 2.5.7.8 right now, is there a newer version you're putting on Google Play?

2.5.7.8 is the newest version.

Pandora could be "copying" the audio level when you first run it. The Bluetooth media A2DP initial volume may be zero. Before running Pandora, in the car, press the volume up button and see what is set at. Then turn the media volume up a bit. Run Pandora after that and see if it takes the setting from the phone.

If not, what happens if you un-install SoundAbout?

Does the same issue still occur when playing Pandora through Bluetooth media in the car?

If you uninstall to test, Go into settings, Manage Apps, find SoundAbout, clear cache, clear data, and force stop to clear it out and start fresh. Then click on un-install.

Ok, went out to my car and tested - here's my findings.

Normally:

Walk to my car, turn on Bluetooth on my phone so when I start it up it's ready to go.
Turn the car on, when my phone connects, I start Pandora.
Volume is always set at whatever my phone had it at before and is never lower.
Turn off my car when I get where I'm going, without stopping/pausing Pandora. And it will just Pause on it's own and Volume remains where it was set.
Come back to the car any time later, and get in and turn on, it resumes from where it was at that volume.

Now:

Got in my car, turned on Bluetooth and waited for it to connect.
checked volume and set it to about 50%
started Pandora, and it played at 50%
turned off the car, and Volume went to 0 when disconnected from the car BT
Turned car back on and stayed at 0.
Turned car back on again after setting it to a manual 50 and went back to 0.

Tried this in Pandora and stock Samsung music player and behaviour followed.

Following your instructions, I uninstalled SoundAbout and restarted the phone. No matter what order of connect, volume, etc, the volume always stayed constant.

Hope this helps a bit.

I noticed some rather strange behavior with some other apps as well, and finally decided to do a Factory Reset on my phone now that it's updated to 4.3 and I will test SoundAbout tomorrow to see if it's still behaving strangely. Reason for mentioning it is NetFlix over the past few days also started to exhibit muted behavior where it never had before.

I'm guessing the answer is YES, but when you connect to the car, is it using Bluetooth A2DP for media?

I started having very similar issues after upgrading my T-Mo GS3 (SGH-T999) from 4.1.2 to 4.3

When using the iBOLT audio cable/dock, the audio levels all run to zero and cannot be manipulated via any app/interface. A reboot is necessary.

The problem stopped when I stopped SoundAbout.

BWB8771,

Did you try Beta version 2.5.7.8.2?
http://soundabout.userboard.net/f8-download-beta-versions

I had code that was muting audio temporarily when the "Audio noisy" event fired in Android. I was attempting to make the audio transition smoother.  I took this code out for that Beta version.
